Teacher Spotlight: Monica Latona

18 Oct

Back in the 90s, Shell Herman and Chris Cruikshank built a solid foundation for KidzArt that was based on creative thinking and problem solving, and giving kids an opportunity to explore art in a non-competitive environment.

Over 15 years later, KidzArt is a global franchise and still going strong. It’s up to the Certified Instructors at various KidzArt locations to keep the vision going and maintain the heart and soul of the KidzArt philosophy. Monica Latona is one such instructor. She’s been with KidzArt for three years and loves it! Her passion for KidzArt comes from a combined love for art—she’s a working artist currently pursuing a B.A. in Art—and a love for working with kids. We asked her some questions to get to know her a little better.

What schools do you teach at?

I currently teach at Catheryn Gates and Junction in Roseville and Sky Ridge in Auburn.  In the past, I’ve taught at Heritage Oaks and Breen elementary, too.

When did you get started at KidzArt, and why did you decide to be a KidzArt instructor?

I started KidzArt in summer of 2008.  I applied during summer camp hiring, so my first experiences were all the cool messy art projects from the summer and went into the school year from there. I wanted to be a KidzArt instructor because I love art, and I love to draw. I also love working with kids.  It is the most ideal job I’ve ever had! I really like to share my love of drawing with others.  Kids are great to work with because they’re really creative and aren’t afraid to think outside the box.

What do you do when you’re not teaching KidzArt classes?

I’m a working artist.  When I’m not at KidzArt, I’m drawing or painting at home. I’ve shown in several galleries in the Sacramento area and do “Live Art” on Sacramento’s Second Saturdays.  I also am a artist representative, meaning I curate shows and represent other artists who want to show in galleries.  It’s sort of like being an agent for artists.  I also lead workshops on how people can find their creative voice.

One of Latona's works, titled "Dancer"

What’s a favorite Kidzart memory of yours?

My favorite memory of KidzArt was from summer camp this year. I have a background in art gallery operations, and when we got to do our KidzArt “Wet n’ Wild” gallery, it was such a cool experience to see all of these young artists showcasing their talents through the artwork.  It was great to see them talk about what mediums they used (and what the word “medium” meant) and the artistic process we went through to get our final product.  They spoke with such confidence about their art.  That was a really great experience for the both the campers, the parents and me!

What’s your favorite part about KidzArt?

I enjoy the idea that there are “no mistakes in art” and “it’s okay to copy AND be different!”  As an artist, this is really important to instill this idea while somebody’s still young.  If our art was always perfect, there’d be no way we could grow!
